· 31.05.2026 · 18:00 · · WRKSH · Dagstuhl Workshop Applied Machine Intelligence (AMI'26)
Participants from academia and industry discuss new directions for applied knowledge-based AI and machine learning. Like in the AMI workshops the years before, the focus is on real world problems and practical issues raised by the application of semantic technologies, data science and machine learning. Beside other topics the workshop this year had a strong focus on knowledge-based AI and on new corporate application areas for semantic technologies.
ontology engineering · automated engineering of WordNets · innovations in semantic search · and automated machine learning (AutoML). Corporate use cases discussed included anomaly detection · supply networks · and circular economy.

· 08.06.2026 · 09:00 · · COLLQ · Semantics and Philosophy in Europe (SPE 13) & OntoBRIX
Since some decades, ontology is used for supporting semantic analysis, both in linguistics and computing. In both fields, this lead to intensive interdisciplinary discussions between these fields and philosophical ontology. This colloquium aims at providing an interdisciplinary forum for researchers from relevant disciplines such as linguistics, computing science, information science, and philosophy. It brings together instalments of two series of events:

The Semantics and Philosophy in Europe (SPE) colloquia provides a forum for presenting research in the interface between linguistic semantics and various areas of philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind/cognition, metaphysics, and philosophy of mathematics). This year's colloquium Semantics and Philosophy in Europe (SPE13) wants to foster in particular the dialogue between applied ontology, as a semantic technology in computer science, and linguistics and philosophy.

The newly named OntoBRIX series intends to connect researchers from the Euroregio Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino and beyond; it has been inaugurated with a meeting in Brixen in 2023.

· 21.09.2026 · 00:00 · · CONFR · Conceptual Modeling with Ontologies and Databases@JOWO 2026
Despite its potential, incorporating ontologies into database conceptual modelling poses challenges related to semantic heterogeneity, the complexity of ontology engineering, and methodological rigour. This call for papers invites contributions that advance theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of ontology-driven conceptual modelling for databases, with the aim of fostering more interoperable, intelligent, and semantically grounded data infrastructures.

Ontology-driven conceptual modelling addresses limitations of traditional database models, such as the relational and Entity–Relationship paradigms, by introducing shared vocabularies and formally defined concepts aligned with domain knowledge. This alignment is particularly relevant in domains where semantic accuracy is critical, such as healthcare, finance, and intelligent, data-driven systems. At the same time, it reflects a methodological shift from schema-centric to knowledge-centric data management, supporting advanced capabilities such as semantic querying, reasoning, and integration with knowledge graphs.

Although it has potential, incorporating ontologies into database conceptual modelling poses challenges related to semantic heterogeneity, the complexity of ontology engineering, and methodological rigour. This call for papers invites contributions that advance theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of ontology-driven conceptual modelling for databases, with the aim of fostering more interoperable, intelligent, and semantically grounded data infrastructures.

· 21.09.2026 · 09:00 · · CONFR · 16th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems
The FOIS conference is a meeting point for all researchers with an interest in formal ontology. Formal ontology is the systematic study of the types of entities and relations making up the domains of interest represented in modern information systems. The conference encourages the submission of high-quality, previously unpublished results on both theoretical issues and practical advancements. FOIS 2026 will have distinct tracks for foundational issues, ontology applications and methods, and domain ontologies.

FOIS aims to be a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication for researchers from various domains who engage with formal ontology. Common application areas include conceptual modeling, database design, knowledge engineering and management, software engineering, organizational modeling, artificial intelligence, robotics, computational linguistics, the life sciences, bioinformatics and scientific research in general, geographic information science, information retrieval, library and information science, as well as the Semantic Web.

FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA), which is a non-profit organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration in formal ontology.
